NETS•T Standard 4: Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

“Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.”

The projects included on this page are examples of how I have demonstrated the importance of being a good digital citizen and an ethical producer and consumer instructional materials within the context of 21st century literacy. Instructional technology encompasses a set of tools to enhance instruction, and must always be used responsibly. Specifically, the definition of instructional literacy and ITEC research is an example of standard 4(a) - Model and teach safe and ethical use of digital information, the entries on copyright issues address standards 4(a) - Model and teach safe and ethical use of digital information and 4(c) - Model digital etiquette and social responsibility, and the online resources journal entry addresses standard 4(b) - Use digital tools to facilitate learner-centered instruction.

Definition of Instructional Technology and ITEC Research

As as introduction to ITEC 77420 - Researching Current Issues in Instructional Technology, this assignment includes my research-based definition of instructional technology as a discipline and a discussion of how instructional technology research can be distinguished from research in related fields. It also includes my review of a 2009 study by Lin & Dwyer that includes many of the criteria I identify as being crucial for intructional technology research.

Journal Entry - Copyright Issues

“Memo to Mrs. Weston” regarding Copyright Violations

One important skill in instructional technology is the ability to know - and truly understand - copyright law as it pertains to fair use of various types of media so that one can comply with the letter and the sprit of the law. The first project, done for ITEC 57427 - Technology & Learning, identifies specific ways to model 21st century literacy and recommends ways in which one can fully comply with the "fair use" doctrine. The second, completed for ITEC 77420 - Researching Current Issues in Instructional Technology as a response to a scenario posed in Tiene and Ingram's (2001) Exploring Current Issues in Educational Technology, demonstrates my abilities to apply my understanding of copyright law to a “real life” situation and identify cases in which certain actions do or do not constitute copyright violations.

Journal Entry - Online Technology Resources

Part of being a successful ITEC professional is being willing to constantly review ITEC resources for possible inclusion within the classroom or as reference sources for developing classroom activities. While I have my own list of favorite sites bookmarked, I often find new sites when I'm away from my main computer, so it becomes difficult to keep all of my thoughts about online resources in one place. This assignment, completed for ITEC 57427 - Technology & Learning, includes a review of five different online technology resource websites. Since completing this assignment, I've begun keeping an annotated listing of my favorites sites so that I can quickly and easily find what I'm seeking when reviewing the list.
